AN EXOTIC AND DREAMLIKE WRAPPER: THE RAISIN LABELS

Raisins were exported to international markets in richly decorated boxes featuring labels and chromolithographs. These served as symbols of luxury and prestige; the quality of the packaging and its illustrations aimed to match the high quality of the meticulously wrapped product.
The exhibition showcases different typologies and iconographies, ranging from strongly “Hispanicized” themes — such as bullfighters and flamenco dancers — to more bucolic scenes, and finally ornamental and figurative motifs in the Modernist or Art Nouveau style, widespread throughout Europe in the early 20th century and representative of luxury and refinement.

Created using various techniques — such as chromolithography and oleography, all derived from lithography — the exhibition reveals the graphic printing process that revolutionised the creation and dissemination of images in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, becoming one of the most representative printmaking techniques of contemporary art.
