Information of interest:
It is one of the elements that define the historical topography of the urban center. On its slopes, remains of dwellings and fortifications of the Roman Dianium have been discovered.
Its design dates back to Islamic times, between the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Since then, different reforms are reflected in its architecture. We highlight the Almohad period, the construction of the Red Tower and the Torre del Consell in the 15th century, the bastions and other defensive systems in Renaissance style, as well as the rebuilding of the Governor’s Palace in the 16th and 17th centuries, under the auspices of the Duke of Lerma, Marquis of Dénia. The destruction of the Palace and the Vila Vella during the War of Succession and the abandonment of the military square in 1859 define the last centuries.
Today, El Castillo is an emblematic heritage site, the scene of conservation and restoration work, as well as innovative proposals for dissemination.
In the upper part of the enclosure you can visit the Archaeological Museum of the city.
Access:
It is located on a gentle hill next to the sea and in the heart of the city.
Access on foot: Next to the Town Hall of Dénia in C/ Hospital, there are some stairs. After climbing this first flight of stairs, on the left side we find C/ Mare Amparo with another small flight of stairs that leads directly to C/ Sant Francesc, where we access the Castle.
Access by car: Sis only accepted for people with functional disabilities (Access to the Governor’s Esplanade).
