The meaning of light and its interpretation date back to the very origins of humanity. The earth, the world of the living, has long been associated with light, while the world of the dead is shrouded in shadows. Light represents life, rebirth and resurrection, and at times even eternity. Different cultures and religions, across time and space, have interpreted it in similar ways.
Through the lecture and the exhibition, we will travel into the past to explore this world of lights and shadows by contemplating the objects that, for centuries, served to illuminate daily life before the arrival of electric lighting—from Roman lamps and Islamic oil lamps to 19th-century fixtures.
