Iglesia de Nuestra Sra. de Loreto o Convento de Las Agustinas

The Convent is a foundation of cloistered Augustinian nuns (1604) and is not open to visitors.

At the time when the church was inaugurated, Dénia was a marquisate, being Marquis of Dénia, D. Francisco Sandoval y Rojas, also Duke of Lerma and valide of King Philip III. The convent was inaugurated in the presence of King Felipe III, the Duke of Lerma, outstanding personalities of the high nobility, clergy, etc.

The architectural complex is composed of: Church, cloister and southern wing of the cloister. The small church, built later (second half of the 17th century), can be accessed during the time of liturgical activities. The church was built on the site of the old hermitage of the “Mare de Déu de Loreto”.

The exterior is austere and measured. Only two doorways break its monotony. The main one is on San Narciso Street and the side one on Loreto Street, both of which show slender semicircular arches flanked by Doric pilasters. The door on San Narciso Street also shows ashlars of sandstone. Its plan is of Latin cross inscribed in a rectangle with chapels that do not communicate with each other and a wide transept with a dome on pendentives. It is covered with a barrel vault with lunettes and the chapels with a vaulted ceiling. The elevation consists of Doric pilasters, rebuilt after 1939.

In the main altar is the altarpiece of the Santísima Sangre. Also contemporary is the image of the Virgen de los Dolores, carved in melis wood at the beginning of 1941.
