Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

Structure and interest

Measured baroque style (XVIII century).

It has a Latin cross plan inscribed in a rectangle. On the exterior there is a venerable niche above the door of the Roser chapel, which contains an image of Sant Roc (San Roque) of modern manufacture. Inside the church are the images of the Virgin – a polychrome image of the Assumption – and, on either side, the saints Vicente Ferrer and Vicente Mártir, the two patron saints of Valencia.

The construction is covered to two waters, calling the attention the central dome, covered with blue tiles and resting on an octagonal drum. The plant of the church shows a forceful Latin cross circumscribed in a rectangle and the nave is developed in 4 sections covered with a barrel vault with lunettes, in addition to side chapels topped with circular domes. Also surprising is the wide transept with a half orange dome.

Also noteworthy are the fresco paintings from the end of the 18th century that can be seen in the dome pendentive and in the transept, as well as the 16th century table with the figure of San Vicente Ferrer and the processional cross from the middle of the 17th century.

Historical Note

It stands on the site of the old hermitage of San Roque, the hospital and some houses. It suffered significant damage during the French War, the War of Independence and was rebuilt in 1939.
