Iglesia de San Mateo Apostol

The church is the first public construction of the Xara. Its construction began in 1877 and was completed 5 years later, in 1881.

The construction is based on exterior load-bearing walls, made of limestone stones joined with mortar. Inside, three naves form the space, separated by sandstone pillars, forming a series of beautiful arches that support the gabled roof. On the outside, in Pilars Street, four buttresses mark and defend the lines of the pillars.

In 1902 the construction of the Abbey was finished, which has a very interesting portal and windows, one of the best works of the master masons. Subsequently, the bell tower was built and inaugurated in 1927.

In the 50’s the church underwent a series of reforms leaving the church with its present appearance. The altar was finished in 1955, the roof was changed and it was discovered that the pillars and arches, then whitewashed, were made of sandstone, so the lime was removed, showing the beauty of the rough stone.
