Good practices at sea

Information about

Enjoy the sea with respect

The Mediterranean is one of the greatest treasures of Dénia. Its waters, beaches and biodiversity are a natural heritage that we must take care of together.

Every gesture counts: enjoying the sea responsibly ensures that future generations can do the same.

Respect marine life

  • Do not throw any type of waste into the sea, not even cigarette butts or organic remains.
  • Avoid contact with marine animals: do not feed them, do not disturb them and keep your distance.
  • If you snorkel or dive, do not touch the seabed or stir the sand: the posidonia and the organisms that live there are very sensitive.
  • Use ecological or biodegradable sunscreen that does not pollute the water or damage marine ecosystems.

Take care of posidonia meadows

Posidonia oceanicais a marine plant that produces oxygen, protects the coast and serves as a refuge for numerous species.

It is a priority habitat protected by European Union, national and Valencian Community regulations.

Their conservation is vital for the ecological balance of the Mediterranean.

  • Do not anchor your boat on posidonia meadows: look for sandy bottoms or use the authorized mooring points.
  • Avoid using heavy anchors or chains that can drag on the bottom.
  • If you practice paddle surfing, kayaking or dinghy sailing, sail without damaging the coastal ecosystem.

Navigate responsibly

Dénia has a wide range of nautical and port facilities. Enjoying the sea by boat also implies commitment to its care:

  • Respect the maximum speeds established near the coast and in bathing areas.
  • Keep your boat in good condition to avoid oil or fuel spills.
  • Do not clean the boat or use chemicals on board.
  • Respect the marked areas, entry and exit channels and the instructions of the Capitanía Marítima.
  • Prioritize boats with electric or fuel-efficient engines whenever possible.

Take care of the beaches and coves

  • Use the walkways to access the beach and avoid stepping on the dunes.
  • Do not collect shells, stones or sand: they are part of the natural balance of the coast.
  • Use showers only as much as necessary and do not use soap or shampoo.
  • Deposit your waste in the appropriate containers and do not leave cigarette butts in the sand.
  • Respect environmental protection signs on natural beaches or beaches with nesting birds.

Reduce your impact

  • Replace single-use products (bottles, cups, straws) with reusable materials.
  • Opt for swimwear and sun creams that are respectful of the sea.
  • Participate in beach and seabed cleanup campaigns organized by the City Council or local associations.

Observe without altering

Whale and seabird watching is a unique experience if done with respect.

  • Do not approach within 60 meters of the animals.
  • Do not try to follow or go around them.
  • Keep calm and observe quietly: the best souvenir is to see them in freedom without causing them stress.

A clean sea is life

Dénia works actively in the conservation of its marine environment through the control and surveillance of protected areas such as the Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserves, actions for the conservation and regeneration of Posidonia Oceanica, monitoring and conservation of species such as sea turtles, birds and cetaceans, environmental education campaigns and volunteering, protection and regeneration of dunes on the coast, etc.

The collaboration of residents, fishermen, businesses and visitors is key to maintaining a clean, healthy and lively sea.

Enjoy, learn and protect

Every swim, every trip and every day by the sea is an opportunity to connect with nature and take care of it.

Your responsible behavior makes the difference: enjoy the sea, but leave no trace.
