Cape San Antonio Marine Reserve

A sanctuary among cliffs and crystalline waters

Between Dénia and Xàbia lies one of the most valuable natural treasures of the Alicante coastline: the Cabo de San Antonio Natural and Marine Reserve.

Actually in this area are located two Marine Reserves: The Natural Reserve of the Seabed of Cabo de San Antonio, extensive, with 900 hectares, occupying the entire area of Las Rotas, from the southern breakwater of the port, through the Marineta Cassiana beach, the coves of Les Rotes, the cliffs of Cabo de San Antonio, the cape itself and entering the term of Xàbia. Within this area is located the Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest of Cabo de San Antonio, 252 hectares, which has greater protection, being a crucial area for the conservation of marine species that inhabit the rocky coves of Dénia. Contrary to what its name may suggest, precisely in this area sport fishing is not allowed, as well as other limitations to preserve the space. This Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest includes all the rocky coves of Les Marines, cliffs and reaches the easternmost point of the Cape.

This protected area combines the majesty of the vertical cliffs with the extraordinary richness of the seabed, creating a landscape where the Mediterranean is shown in its purest and wildest version.

The terrestrial area is formed by large limestone walls that plummet into the sea from more than 150 meters high. From its viewpoints you can get spectacular views of the coast and the Gulf of Valencia, and on clear days you can even see the Balearic Islands. But it is underwater where the marine reserves keep their most valuable secrets: oceanic posidonias, multicolored fish, corals, mollusks, underwater meadows and submerged caves form an ecosystem of the highest biodiversity, fundamental for the balance of the Mediterranean.

The Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserves were created with the aim of conserving this exceptional environment and regulating its use. Therefore, navigation, anchoring, fishing and water activities are strictly regulated, allowing only those that are respectful of the environment and carried out in authorized areas. Kayaking, paddle surfing or recreational diving – the latter always with prior permission (in dive centers approved by Consellería manage it directly) – are sustainable ways to enjoy this enclave without altering its balance.

The environment also offers multiple possibilities on land: interpretive trails, cycling routes, bird watching areas and visits to the Cabo de San Antonio lighthouse, all framed by a landscape that invites contemplation, calm and disconnection.

The Seabed Nature Reserve and the Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest are declared ZEPA (Special Bird Protection Area).

To visit the Cabo de San Antonio Reserves is to engage with nature. It is a place to be impressed, but also to become aware. Here, every step and every stroke counts. Therefore, it is essential to respect the rules of use, avoid generating waste and do not alter the marine or terrestrial life.
