Montgó Natural Park

The great watchman of the Mediterranean

The Montgó Natural Park is one of the great scenic and ecological treasures of Dénia. This imposing mountain, which rises up to 753 meters high next to the sea, acts as a natural viewpoint to observe the Marina Alta and the coast, offering spectacular panoramic views and an exceptional biodiversity. Declared a natural park in 1987, the Montgó is home to more than 650 species of flora and a rich fauna, and is the habitat of protected species that find refuge here.

It has also been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds(SPA), as well as a Special Area of Conservation(SAC) and Site of Community Interest(SCI).

Its marked trails allow visitors to enter an environment of great environmental and cultural value, where archaeological remains, ancient terraced crops, viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean and places of great beauty coexist. From gentle routes for the whole family to more demanding ascents for experienced hikers, the Montgó invites you to discover, breathe and reconnect with nature. A protected area to be enjoyed responsibly, at any time of the year.

Information

Risk prevention and safety recommendations

The Montgó Natural Park is an environment of great beauty, but also of natural conditions that require caution. To enjoy a safe visit and avoid risky situations, it is essential to follow a series of basic recommendations, especially during the busiest or hottest periods.

  1. Get informed before leaving. Check the status of the routes, the weather forecast and risk alerts (extreme temperatures, wind, rain or forest fires). You can do this through the Interpretation Center or the park’s official website. Refrain from climbing the Montgó when there is a risk of storm, fog or high temperatures. There are no places to take shelter.
  2. Avoid the central hours of the day in summer. The heat can be extreme, and most routes offer little or no shade. Leave early and wear appropriate clothing, a hat or cap, and sun protection.
  3. Water, always. It is essential to carry enough water, especially on ascending routes or on hot days. There are no natural springs along the routes.
  4. Signaling and orientation. Always follow the marked trails and respect the signs. Leaving the authorized routes may pose a risk to you and to the natural environment.
  5. Do not light fires. It is strictly forbidden to light fires or use pyrotechnic material throughout the park, all year round. The Montgó is a very high risk area for forest fires.
  6. Cell phone charged. Make sure you have a cell phone with enough battery, and let someone know your route if you go out alone or at the last minute. Consider that there are areas where there is no coverage.
  7. Don’t overestimate your fitness. The ascent to the Montgó can be demanding in some sections, especially in the highest part. If you are not used to hiking, opt for the more accessible and low-difficulty routes in this environment or choose other environments without slopes.
  8. Respect the fauna and flora. Do not pick plants, do not feed animals, and avoid disturbing noises. You are in a protected area.

In case of emergency, call 112 and try to give the location as precisely as possible. Remember that the best way to enjoy the Montgó is to do it with respect, responsibility and common sense. Nature will thank you, and so will you.

Bicycling in the Montgó Natural Park

The use of bicycles in the Montgó Natural Park is a healthy and sustainable way to enjoy the environment, as long as it is done in a responsible and respectful way with the natural and cultural values of the protected area.

Currently, park regulations restrict bicycle use to authorized tracks and paths, prohibiting cycling on narrow trails, in areas of high ecological value, or in areas particularly susceptible to erosion. The aim is to minimize the impact on flora, fauna, and the terrain itself, and to ensure the safety of all users, as many sections are shared with hikers.

Some of the tracks suitable for bicycles are the wider sections of the Camí de la Colònia, the road that connects with Jesús Pobre or certain areas around the Parc Forestal de Les Planes. However, the ascent to the top of the Montgó and the technical mountain routes are not suitable or recommended for bicycles, neither for safety nor for conservation.

For a responsible use of bicycles in the Montgó, take into account the following recommendations:

  • Be informed before accessing the park: consult the park maps and the areas allowed for cycling.
  • Prioritize coexistence: yield to hikers and reduce speed in shared areas.
  • Avoid sudden braking: skidding damages the soil and favors erosion.
  • Do not leave the marked routes: off-road riding is strictly forbidden.
  • Respect the tranquility of the environment: avoid unnecessary noise and do not use loudspeakers.
  • Do not access on rainy days or after storms: the soil is more fragile and deteriorates easily.
