Baix la Mar is the picturesque seaside neighborhood located between the port and the castle walls. Its origins date back to the Islamic period as the most important maritime raval of the city, although its current identity was consolidated during the nineteenth century with the arrival of sailors and the rise of port trade. In 1837 it even had independent municipal status, although only for two years.
Today, Baix la Mar is noted for its narrow, pedestrian streets, brightly painted low houses and unmistakable Mediterranean atmosphere. Landmarks include the Plaça de Sant Antoni and the Placeta de la Creu, where a stone cross and an 18th-century devotional tile stand. A curious urban detail is the life-size bronze sculpture representing a Playmobil, installed as a tribute to the filming in Dénia of the movie Captain Jones.
