The Castle Tunnel-Refuge is one of the most unique spaces in Dénia and a symbol of its historical memory. It was built during the Spanish Civil War (1937-1938) in order to protect the civilian population from bombing. It connects the city center with the port district, crossing the subsoil of the castle mountain.
Today the tunnel fulfills its function as a passageway connecting two parts of the city, while at the same time it is a place of remembrance and a place to visit with an exhibition of information panels on the historical interest of the place. A tour of the tunnel provides a better understanding of the daily life of the residents during the conflict, as well as an insight into the importance of civil protection at that time.
