Located in the rural district of La Xara, south of Dénia, this church was the first public construction of La Xara, begun in 1877 and completed in 1881, and is an architectural and community symbol of the area.
Architecture and style
With a plan of three naves, the central one wider than the lateral ones, it is supported by sandstone pillars with semicircular arches that support a groin vault roof and a gable roof. The four exterior buttresses on Pilars street that define its structural form stand out.
The side bell tower, completed in 1927, is divided into three sections: the lower one with the clock, the intermediate one with the bells and the upper one with a modern structure. The adjoining abbey, built in 1902, includes windows and a portal worked by local stonemasons and represents a remarkable example of the stonework in the region.
