Located on a hill in the heart of the city, Dénia Castle overlooks the town center, the Montgó Natural Park and the Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve. Of Islamic origin, its first structures date back to the11th and 12th centuries, when it was part of the Taifa kingdom of Daniya.
Under the reign of James I, the castle passed into Christian hands and underwent successive renovations during the XV to XVII centuries. The Dukes of Lerma promoted a great Renaissance reform, building the Governor’s Palace with gardens, royal rooms and monumental staircases. Although part of these buildings ended in ruins after various conflicts, today the site offers an architectural mosaic that combines Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance and defensive elements.
Groups should inform in advance of their visit.
