Jesus Pobre Church

Located in the Plaza del Convento in the hamlet of Jesús Pobre (about 10 km from Dénia and south of the Montgó), this historic complex arose from the initiative of the Franciscan friar Fray Pedro Esteve, known as Pare Pere, who in the first half of the seventeenth century found a carving of Christ lying that he promoted in the old farmhouse of Benissadeví, later renamed Jesús Pobre.

History and architecture

The church, built between 1660 and 1668, follows the rural baroque model with a rectangular floor plan, barrel vault and a chapel at the back as the main altar. Its main portal is a Doric portal inspired by the treatises of Sebastián Serlio, including pilasters, split pediment and a ceramic tympanum with the image of Pare Pere in prayer before Jesús Pobre.

The adjoining Franciscan convent, later (18th century), was part of the monastic complex that gave rise to the modern town. Although today it remains in private hands and is in the process of being declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, it preserves valuable architectural elements such as the old cloister, heraldic coats of arms and ornamental ceramics from the 18th century.
