Riurau del Senyoret

In Jesús Pobre, sheltered by the mountain and surrounded by centuries-old vineyards, one of the most emblematic rural constructions of the Marina Alta is preserved: the Riurau del Senyoret. Much more than an architectural gem, this riurau is a symbol of traditional agricultural life and the legacy of generations who cultivated the land with wisdom and respect.

Built between 1848 and 1873, the riurau was designed with a very specific purpose that was vital to the local economy: protecting the Muscat grapes during their drying process, preventing the rain from ruining the future raisins. Its structure, with ten double-sided segmental arches, allowed the grapes to ventilate while keeping them sheltered, turning the building into an open-air workshop for producing one of the region’s most prized products.

During the cold months, the riurau also served as a storage space for agricultural tools and equipment, making it a versatile and essential site in everyday rural life.

Today, this historic construction continues to fulfil its ancestral function every year during the festival of “L’Escaldà”—held on the last Sunday of August—when the village gathers to relive the ancient process of scalding the grapes, in a moving tribute to its roots.

In addition, the riurau remains a hub of local life and activity. Every Sunday it comes alive with the Mercat del Riurau, where you can discover organic products, crafts, and flavours from local producers. And on the first Sunday of every month, it becomes a paradise for vintage lovers during the Fira de Brocanters, an antiques and collectibles fair full of charm.

The Riurau del Senyoret is not just a building: it is living history, rural culture, and a shared heritage.
Its original name is Gran Riurau del Senyor de Benissadevi. Today it is known as riurau del Senyoret or riurau de Jesús Pobre.
