San Antonio Church

Located in the central Plaza del Convento, the Church of San Antonio is part of the old complex of the Franciscan Convent of San Antonio de Padua, founded in the late sixteenth century and partly destroyed, being rebuilt its church in the eighteenth century after several war conflicts.

History and architecture

  • The church was built in the first half of the XVII century and remodeled in the XVIII century, adopting a Doric order façade , a niche with an image of the saint and a bell tower integrated in its front structure.
  • Its Latin cross plan includes a central nave and eight side chapels, divided by Doric pilasters. The main altar stands out, presided over by a large enameled cross with biblical scenes, the work of the German goldsmith Egino Weiner in 1990.

From convent to parish

Originally part of a convent with cloister and orchard, today only the partial remains of the cloister are preserved, an architectural testimony of the seventeenth century. After the disentailment, the church remained standing, becoming a parish church, while the convent grounds were used for other purposes.

  • Perfect to combine with a visit to the traditional neighborhoods of the Historic Center, Baix la Mar and the Castle.
  • During the Fallas, in March, the offering of flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados takes place in the Plaza del Convento.
