Route 1: The Greenway

Very easy route to get you started in the world of Nordic Walking.

Good road surface, with sections of compacted gravel and asphalt layer.

Enjoy Nordic Walking among orange trees.

The Dénia Greenway, on the old FEVE Carcaixent-Dénia railway line, crosses a sea of orange groves parallel to the coast to the north of the historic town that sits at the foot of the Montgó.

The old railway track is a friendly route to go to the beach of Las Marinas, neighboring villages or continue to the Natural Park Marjal de Pego-Oliva.

The Greenway of Dénia corresponds at its southern end with the extinct railroad line Carcagente/Carcaixent – Dénia, the oldest narrow gauge of the Peninsula that was 90 years in operation.

The first section Carcaixent – Gandía dates from 1864 and began to operate as a tramway with animal traction along its 35 km of tracks. Later, in 1884, it was extended to Dénia as a conventional steam traction railroad.

With a marked agricultural vocation, this train had as its main merchant task the transport of citrus fruits from the Valencian orchards to the port of Dénia.

Its quiet running was cut short in 1969, when the Carcaixent-Gandía section was closed. However, a few years later a small part of its route (between Tavernes and Gandía) would be occupied by a modern commuter train from Valencia via Silla-Cullera. The first broad gauge trains arrived in Gandía in 1972.

The second Dénia-Gandia section was closed in 1974 with the hope that its route would be used to extend the Cercanías to Dénia. But the project was not carried out.

After 36 years of abandonment, in which there were attempts to reopen the railroad, the track has come back to life in 2010 thanks to the impulse of the City Council of Dénia and the refurbishment works carried out under the Natural Paths Program of the Ministry of Environment. Now there are hundreds of cyclists and walkers, of all kinds and conditions, who travel daily along the 5.8 km through the municipality of Dénia.

The old train station of Dénia is the most prominent building of the entire railroad line, currently houses the Toy Museum in tribute to the toy tradition of the city that came to have numerous factories in the twentieth century. It is completed with an exhibition hall.
