This excursion combines the spectacular natural beauty of the Fuentes del Algar with the historic charm of Guadalest Castle, offering one of the most comprehensive routes through the Alicante countryside. To make the most of it, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and not forgetting your swimwear, as the area offers plenty of places to swim. You can reach the area by enjoying the winding roads and scenery of the Coll de Rates, or more directly via the AP-7 motorway towards Altea.
PLACES OF INTEREST
- The first must-see stop is Callosa d’en Sarrià, a world-renowned centre for the production of loquats with a Designation of Origin. Its old town invites you on a cultural tour that includes the Church of St John the Baptist, the historic wash house known as the ‘Poador’ and the picturesque climb up to Calvario. It is also the ideal place to sample the local cuisine, featuring traditional dishes such as olleta de blat, stuffed peppers and sweets made with medlars.
- Just 3 kilometres away lies Les Fonts d’Algar, a natural site featuring waterfalls and natural pools (tolls) of crystal-clear water. This area not only offers a refreshing swim but also an educational trail through its Arboretum and collection of aromatic plants.
- For the more active, this is the starting point for the hiking trail to Fort de Bèrnia, whilst families can visit the nearby DinoPark, a dinosaur theme park set in natural surroundings.
- The highlight is the Castell de Guadalest, a town of Muslim origin that has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site. Perched on a crag and accessible via a tunnel carved into the rock, the village captivates visitors with its heritage, notably the Castle of San José, the Casa Orduña and its unique miniature museums.
- For those seeking a pure mountain experience, the Font dels Teixos area, next to the reservoir, offers the perfect spot for a day’s picnic in close contact with nature.
